Who makes it: Vigneti Massa

Vigneti Massa is the winery of Walter Massa, a visionary winegrower and a central figure in the revival of Timorasso, the native variety of the Colli Tortonesi (eastern Piedmont). From the ’80s, when few believed in the potential of this variety, Massa began to vinify it with seriousness and insight, marking out the way for a new territorial identity. Today, Vigneti Massa is a byword for research, authenticity and local pride, with an independent approach, often outside the box, but always consistent with the idea of making great wine from local grapes.

The vine of Derthona

Timorasso

Timorasso is a white grape variety indigenous to south-eastern Piedmont, rediscovered in the 1990s after a long period of neglect. Today it is considered one of the most surprising and long-lived whites of Italy, especially in the Colli Tortonesi area (province of Alessandria), where it gives structured, mineral wines with great ageing potential. Thanks to the pioneering work of producers such as Walter Massa, Timorasso has regained its prestige, becoming the symbol of the winemaking revival of Colli Tortonesi DOC, where it is often shown on the label as Derthona.

Derthona: the Colli Tortonesi (Alessandria) area

Colli Tortonesi (Alessandria)

Colli Tortonesi (Alessandria)

The Colli Tortonesi are a striking wine area in the south-eastern part of Piedmont, in the province of Alessandria, on the border with Lombardy and Liguria. This hilly, well-ventilated territory is famous for having given new life to one of the rarest and most prized white varieties of Italy: Timorasso. Thanks to its limestone-marl soils, an average altitude of between 250 and 400 m above sea level and an Apennine microclimate, the wines of the Colli Tortonesi stand out for their finesse, structure and ageing potential, in both the whites and the native and international reds.

Profile of Derthona

Primary aromas: Yellow fruit (peach, apple, medlar), Citrus (citron, lime) and White flowers and broom

Secondary aromas: Flint, light petrol notes (already perceptible when young), Acacia honey and medicinal herbs

Tertiary aromas: Hazelnut, ginger, resin, intense petrol notes

Tasting notes: The Derthona 2023 from Walter Massa is a single-variety Timorasso that combines substance, tension and depth. On the palate it is saline and straight, with a substantial structure supported by lively acidity. It closes long on citrus and mineral memories and a pleasant bitter note. Despite its youth, it already shows complexity and balance, but promises a memorable evolution in the bottle.

Ageing methods used for Derthona

In Stainless Steel (7–18 months)

Ageing in stainless steel for between 7 and 18 months is a winemaking choice aimed at obtaining more structured, complex wines, while retaining the varietal purity and aromatic precision typical of an inert material. Unlike short ageing periods, here the wine is left to mature for longer in stainless steel so that it stabilises naturally, develops slowly and gains greater balance, without any aromatic interference from wood or oxidation.

In bottle (1–6 months)

Ageing in bottle for 1 to 6 months is a final but fundamental stage in the development of a wine. During this period, the wine – already stabilised and bottled – continues to mature away from oxygen, developing greater harmony between its components. It is a very widespread practice for wines that have completed their ageing in stainless steel or wood and that need a minimum settling time to reach the right balance before going on sale.
