The vine of “Di Gino” Verdicchio

Verdicchio

Verdicchio is one of the most important and long-lived white grape varieties in Italy, an absolute symbol of the Marche region. It is prized for its freshness, marked salinity, aromatic finesse and extraordinary ageing capacity, qualities that make it the star of both young, immediate wines and great whites for long ageing. The name derives from "verde" (green), because of the greenish reflections the wine often retains even as it evolves.

Fermentation in concrete vats

Fermentation in concrete vats is an ancient technique, today increasingly appreciated in winemaking, for both red and white wines. Concrete vats, often oval or truncated-cone in shape, offer natural thermal stability and allow a slow, steady fermentation, without the thermal inertia of steel or the aromatic influence of wood. The result is a pure, expressive, vibrant wine, in which the grape variety and the terroir can emerge without interference. Often chosen by artisan or biodynamic growers, this technique allows gentle micro-oxygenation, thanks to the microporosity of the concrete, while keeping a neutral aromatic profile.

Ageing methods used for “Di Gino” Verdicchio

In bottle (1–6 months)

Ageing in bottle for 1 to 6 months is a final but fundamental stage in the development of a wine. During this period, the wine – already stabilised and bottled – continues to mature away from oxygen, developing greater harmony between its components. It is a very widespread practice for wines that have completed their ageing in stainless steel or wood and that need a minimum settling time to reach the right balance before going on sale.

Concrete, a porous and thermally stable material, allows a gentle maturation of the wine, similar to that of wood but without imparting any aroma, keeping the varietal characteristics and the freshness of the fruit intact.
