It is an “umbrella” DOC, that is, a supra-regional appellation that embraces the whole territory of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, allowing producers to unify the territorial indications under a single mark, while keeping their local typicity. This DOC takes in a great variety of grape varieties, both native and international, and allows a flexible production of white, red, rosé, sparkling and lightly sparkling wines, often vinified as a single variety.

Who makes it: Cantina Puiatti

Founded in 1967 by Giovanni Puiatti, Cantina Puiatti is one of the most iconic names in Friuli Venezia Giulia, particularly for its modern, characterful white wines. Puiatti’s philosophy rests on three pillars: No wood: no use of wood in winemaking, so as to respect the identity of the grape variety as fully as possible. No maceration: strict white winemaking for the whites. No compromises: only stainless steel and expressive substance. The aim is to make essential, clean, mineral wines that reflect the transparency of the Friulian terroir.

The vine of Friulano

Friulano

Friulano is a native white grape variety and a symbol of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, capable of producing elegant, dry and terroir-driven wines, with an unmistakable almond note. Historically known as Tocai Friulano, it took its present name after the agreement with Hungary that banned the use of the term "Tocai" in order to avoid confusion with Hungarian Tokaji. It is today one of the most representative Italian whites for typicity, versatility and aromatic recognisability, often chosen to accompany the dishes of Friulian cuisine.
