Who makes it: I Vigneri

I Vigneri is a wine project born thanks to Salvo Foti, one of the greatest interpreters of Etna viticulture. The name is inspired by the guild of winegrowers founded in 1435 in Catania, and the project aims to bring the old farming practices of the area back to life. The philosophy of the winery is based on mountain viticulture, manual work and environmentally respectful practices. The vineyards lie between 600 and 1200 metres above sea level, on volcanic soils that give the wines a unique mineral character.

Nerello Mascalese

Nerello Mascalese is one of the most important and representative black grape varieties of Sicily, and in particular of the volcanic territories of Etna. Known for its extraordinary elegance and its ability to reflect the terroir, Nerello Mascalese is considered the emblematic variety of the wines of Etna DOC, where it is often vinified as a single variety or blended with Nerello Cappuccio.

Nerello Cappuccio

Nerello Cappuccio is a black grape variety indigenous to Sicily, closely bound up with the island’s traditional viticulture. Although less well known and less widely planted than the more famous Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio plays a fundamental role in the production of red wines with great character, especially in the Etna DOC appellation. Often used in blends with Nerello Mascalese, it helps to give colour, softness and roundness to the wines, completing the elegant, mineral structure of its companion variety.

Winemaking methods used for I Vigneri Rosso

Maceration with skins and stems

Maceration with skins and stems is a traditional winemaking technique that makes it possible to obtain wines with an intense, structured and complex profile. This method consists in leaving the must in contact with the grape skins and stems during alcoholic fermentation for a period of around a week. The result is a wine that fully expresses the varietal characteristics of the grape, with well-integrated tannins, deep aromas and a balance between freshness and structure.

Spontaneous fermentation

Widely valued in the world of natural and biodynamic wine, it brings out biodiversity and terroir, giving the wine a unique and authentic character.

Foot treading

Foot treading is one of the oldest and most fascinating techniques of traditional winemaking. It consists in crushing the grape berries using the pressure of bare feet alone, to break the skins gently and release the must, without damaging the pips and skins aggressively. A gesture rich in peasant culture, conviviality and respect for the raw material, today it is practised mainly in artisan settings or for limited productions of high symbolic or qualitative value.
