Petrizza BIO (2024) - Masone Mannu

€€€€€

The Masone Mannu estate is focusing on biodynamic production / organic farming for the Petrizza, since the grapes are described as “biodynamically grown / natural” in its commercial material. The name Petrizza evokes the decomposed granite soil on which the vineyards are grown: sands derived from the breakdown of granite, which give the characteristic minerality and freshness.

It is produced exclusively in Gallura, the north-eastern area of the island, between the provinces of Sassari and Olbia-Tempio, on poor but free-draining granite soils, close to the sea and swept by the mistral. This dry white stands out for its marine freshness, salinity, aromatic character and structure, which can range from immediate drinkability to complex, long-lived versions, especially in the Superiore type.

Who makes it: Masone Mannu

Located in the municipality of Monti (SS), a few kilometres from Olbia, Tenuta Masone Mannu takes its name from the old Logudorese term “masone mannu”, meaning “large property”. The estate covers almost 100 hectares, of which about 40 hectares are given over to specialised vineyards. Since 2018 Masone Mannu has been part of a relaunch and innovation project led by Giordano Emendatori, already the owner of Tenuta Mara in Romagna, with the declared aim of moving towards biodynamic and sustainable practices.

The vine of Petrizza BIO

Vermentino

Vermentino is a highly prized white grape variety, found mainly in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean. Its origin is debated, but it is thought to come from the Iberian peninsula or from Liguria, from where it would then have spread to Sardinia, Tuscany and Corsica. Today it is also grown in some areas of southern France.

Gallura

Gallura

Gallura is a historic wine region in north-eastern Sardinia, between the province of Olbia-Tempio and part of Sassari.Famous for its outcrops of granite, its sandy soils, its constant wind and its hills facing the sea and the Limbara mountains, Gallura is the cradle of Vermentino di Gallura DOCG, the only DOCG wine in Sardinia. The combination of altitudes of between 300 and 500 metres, a dry, windy climate and poor soils gives the wines of Gallura salinity, freshness, mineral tension and a unique ability to express their territory.

White winemaking

White winemaking is a technique that makes it possible to obtain white wines from both white and black grapes, avoiding contact between the must and the skins. This process emphasises the freshness, aromatic purity and finesse of the wine, preserving its fruity and floral notes and avoiding the extraction of tannins and anthocyanins. Used for the production of dry, aromatic and sparkling white wines, white winemaking involves temperature-controlled fermentation in order to maintain the integrity of the aromas and of the wine's natural acidity.

Ageing methods used for Petrizza BIO

In stainless steel (1–6 months)

Ageing in stainless steel for 1 to 6 months is a winemaking practice widely used for young, fresh, varietal wines, aimed at preserving the aromatic fragrance and gustatory integrity of the wine immediately after fermentation. This choice allows the wine to be stabilised, to settle naturally and to be ready for drinking within a few months, retaining vitality, tension and precision.

In bottle (1–6 months)

Ageing in bottle for 1 to 6 months is a final but fundamental stage in the development of a wine. During this period, the wine – already stabilised and bottled – continues to mature away from oxygen, developing greater harmony between its components. It is a very widespread practice for wines that have completed their ageing in stainless steel or wood and that need a minimum settling time to reach the right balance before going on sale.
