Riné (2022) - Cantrina

€€€€€

“Riné” is the flagship wine of Cantrina and represents the creative philosophy of the winery: combining grape varieties of different origins to create an elegant, long-lived white. The name comes from the local term “Riné”, used for Riesling Renano in the Garda bresciano area. This variety, together with Chardonnay, gives the wine freshness, complexity and the ability to evolve over time. Vinifying the grapes separately and blending them in spring make it possible to bring out the particular qualities of each variety, merging the roundness of Chardonnay with the verticality and mineral notes of Riesling.

Winemaking methods used for Riné

Mixed fermentation in stainless steel and barrique

Fermentation partly in stainless steel and partly in barrique is a mixed winemaking technique that allows freshness and complexity to be combined in the wine, exploiting the advantages of both materials. This method involves a share of the must fermenting in stainless steel tanks, to preserve primary aromas and freshness, while another share ferments directly in oak barriques (small 225-litre casks), where contact with the wood gives structure, depth and spicy notes.

Ageing methods used for Riné

In stainless steel

Ageing in stainless steel is a winemaking practice aimed at preserving the freshness, aromatic integrity and varietal purity of the wine. It is used above all for white, rosé and young red wines, but also for light, easy-drinking reds that do not require maturation in wood. Stainless steel vessels are inert and impermeable to oxygen, so they do not interact with the wine: this makes it possible to bring out the fruity, floral and mineral component of the grape and of the terroir.

In cask

Ageing in large casks is one of the oldest and most significant winemaking techniques for maturing wine. It consists in leaving the wine to rest in large wooden casks, generally Slavonian or French oak, for a period that can range from a few months up to several years. Unlike barriques, casks have a greater capacity (from 5 to 50 hectolitres or more), offering gentle, slow micro-oxygenation. This allows gradual maturation, enhancing the structure and keeping the fruit intact, without the wood dominating the aromatic profile.
