The name “Stella Retica” evokes the constellation that once guided climbers in the valley and the history of the Rhaetian peoples. Sassella is one of the five most prestigious subzones of Valtellina (along with Grumello, Inferno, Maroggia and Valgella) and is characterised by heroic terracing with a southern aspect and centuries-old dry-stone walls. Ar.Pe.Pe. is considered the foremost interpreter of traditional Valtellina Nebbiolo.

The vine of Sassella “Stella Retica”

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is one of the greatest black grape varieties in the world and the pride of Piedmont, capable of producing wines of extraordinary elegance, complexity and longevity. It is the basis of Barolo and Barbaresco, but also of many other noble appellations of northern Italy. The name may derive from “nebbia” (fog), because of the waxy bloom that covers the ripe berries or because of the often late harvest, between October and November, when the fogs wrap the hills of the Langhe.

Ageing methods used for Sassella “Stella Retica”

In cask (19–36 months)

Ageing in barrique for 7 to 18 months is one of the most common stages for medium- and full-bodied wines, where the wood has time to interact with the wine in depth without dominating it. This length gives balanced wines, with greater aromatic complexity, polished tannins and a more refined evolutionary profile, keeping varietal and tertiary notes in balance.

In bottle (7–18 months)

Ageing in bottle for a period of between 7 and 18 months represents an intermediate stage of maturation, ideal for those wines that have already completed their ageing in wood, stainless steel or concrete, and that need further time to achieve full harmony and stability before being released. During this period, the wine develops slowly in the absence of oxygen, refining its structure, aromatic balance and softness on the palate.
