History and Origin of the Appellation
The Crozes-Hermitage AOC was officially recognised in 1937, but the winemaking tradition of the area dates back to Roman times. The name comes from Crozes, one of the main municipalities of the area, and by its closeness to the famous hill of Hermitage, an iconic terroir of the Rhône Valley.The appellation has expanded over time, going from a small core around Hermitage to a wide area covering 11 municipalities, and is today one of the most important AOCs in France.Geography and Territory Extent of the Appellation The Crozes-Hermitage AOC covers around 1.500 hectares of vineyards on the left bank of the Rhône, surrounding the hill of Hermitage.
