The IGT (Indicazioni Geografiche Tipiche) are the first level of classification for wines with a geographical indication in Italy. Introduced by the law of 1992, IGTs guarantee that at least 85% of the grapes come from a specific geographical area, but they offer producers a greater freedom in the choice of grape varieties, winemaking techniques and styles, compared with DOC and DOCG.

They are the category that has revolutionised Italian wine, thanks to the birth of the famous "Supertuscan": wines of the very highest quality that did not fit the DOC production rules but won over international critics (e.g. Sassicaia, Tignanello, Solaia).
