Lugana DOC

Lugana DOC is one of the most prestigious appellations in Italy, straddling Lombardy and Veneto on the southern shores of Lake Garda. Recognised in 1967, this appellation is known for producing elegant, mineral white wines, made mainly from the Turbiana grape (Trebbiano di Lugana), a native variety that best expresses the unique character of the area.

Characteristics of Lugana DOC Wines

Colour

  • Bright straw yellow: With greenish highlights in young wines and golden ones in more evolved wines.

Aromas

  • Fruity: Notes of green apple, peach, citrus and tropical fruit.
  • Floral: Hints of white flowers, acacia and camomile.
  • Mineral: Hints of flint and a light savouriness, typical of clay soils.
  • Developing: In the aged wines, aromas of almond, honey and sweet spices emerge.

Palate

  • Fresh and savoury: With marked acidity that gives the wine liveliness.
  • Harmonious and structured: With an elegant body and a pleasing length.

Production Areas

The Lugana DOC appellation covers an area spread across five municipalities between Lombardy and the Veneto:
  • Desenzano del Garda and Sirmione (Lombardy): They produce fresh, mineral wines thanks to the clay-rich soils.
  • Peschiera del Garda, Pozzolengo and Lonato del Garda (Veneto): Marked by greater structure and complexity.

Grape Variety Used

  • Turbiana (Trebbiano di Lugana): A native variety that gives the Lugana DOC its freshness, minerality and ageing capacity.
