Mâcon-Villages AOC
The Mâcon-Villages AOC is a Denominazione di Origine Controllata established in 1937, which is one of the freshest and most immediate expressions of the white wines produced in the region of Mâconnais, in the south of the Burgundy, in France. This appellation is reserved exclusively for white wines made from Chardonnay, the signature grape variety of this area.
Terroir and Climate
- Production area: The appellation covers around 26 communes in the southern part of the Mâconnais, in the Saône-et-Loire.
- Soils: A varied composition of limestone, clay e marl, which give the wines a marked minerality.
- Climate: Of the continental with southern influences, marked by hot summers and harsh winters. This climate helps the grapes ripen fully, while keeping good acidity.
Grape Variety Used
- 100% Chardonnay: The appellation does not allow the use of other grape varieties. Chardonnay here shows itself in a fresher, fruitier way than in the more structured versions of the Côte de Beaune.
Sensory Profile
I Mâcon-Villages are white wines of great freshness and immediacy, ideal for drinking young.- Colour: Straw yellow with pale green highlights.
- Nose: Intense and fragrant, with notes of white flowers (acacia, hawthorn), fresh fruit (green apple, peach, citrus) and light shades mineral notes.
- Palate: Dry, fresh e fruity, with a pleasant salinity and a good acidity. In the best examples, delicate notes emerge of hazelnut e butter, especially if aged on the fine lees.
Winemaking Style
- Winemaking in stainless steel: To preserve the freshness and aromatic purity of Chardonnay.
- Ageing on the fine lees: (optional) to add softness and complexity.
- Rarely aged in wood: To keep the profile fresh and fruity.
Food Pairings
Thanks to their freshness and versatility, the Mâcon-Villages they pair perfectly with:- Light starters and salads.
- Fish-based dishes and shellfish.
- Fresh cheeses and goat's cheese.
- White meat in simple preparations.
- Vegetarian cuisine and dishes based on grilled vegetables.
Differences from the Other Appellations
- Mâcon AOC: Broader and less selective, it also allows the production of reds and rosés.
- Mâcon + village name (e.g. Mâcon-Lugny): It indicates wines more closely tied to the specific terroir of the village, often of higher quality.
- Pouilly-Fuissé AOC: A more complex, structured expression of Chardonnay, often with ageing in wood.
Why Choose a Mâcon-Villages AOC?
- Excellent value for money: It gives fresh, honest Chardonnay wines at affordable prices.
- Freshness and drinkability: Perfect for those looking for an immediate, versatile white wine.
- An authentic expression of Chardonnay: It is a pure, direct version of the grape variety.
