Gamay

The Gamay is a grape variety with black berries native to the France, known for producing fresh, fruity wines for early drinking. It is the flagship variety of the region of Beaujolais, but it is also grown in other parts of Burgundy and in some wine regions around the world.

Origin and Spread

  • Origin: It dates back to fourteenth century in the Burgundy. In 1395 the Duke of Burgundy banned its cultivation on the best sites in favour of Pinot Nero, pushing Gamay southwards, into the Beaujolais.
  • Main growing areas:
    • France: Beaujolais, Mâconnais, Loire Valley.
    • Switzerland: Canton of Geneva and Valais.
    • Canada e New Zealand: for fresh, fruity wines.

Ampelographic Characteristics

  • Leaf: Medium, dark green in colour.
  • Bunch: Medium-large, cylindrical, compact.
  • Berry: Small, with a thin blue-black skin.
  • Ripening: Early-ripening, ideal for cool climates.

Sensory Profile

  • Colour: Bright ruby red, sometimes with purple reflections.
  • Nose: Intense and fragrant, with notes of red fruit (cherry, raspberry, strawberry), flowers (violet, peony) and light shades of spices.
  • Palate: Wines light, fresh e fruity, with soft tannins and lively acidity. The wines from the most important crus can have greater body e complexity.

Winemaking Styles

  • Carbonic maceration: A technique typical of the Beaujolais Nouveau which brings out fruity aromas and reduces tannin, making the wine soft and immediate.
  • Traditional winemaking: Used in the Beaujolais crus, to obtain more structured, long-lived wines.
  • Ageing: In stainless steel for freshness or in oak for greater complexity.

Main Wines and Production Areas

  • Beaujolais AOC: Young, light, fruity wines, ideal for drinking straight away.
  • Beaujolais Nouveau: A novello wine, released every year in November, famous for its freshness and simplicity.
  • Beaujolais-Villages: More expressive wines, with greater structure.
  • The 10 Crus of Beaujolais: (Morgon, Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie, etc.) produce more complex versions, capable of ageing.

Food Pairings

Thanks to its freshness and to the light tannins, Gamay is very versatile:
  • Cured meats, fresh cheeses e white meat dishes.
  • Poultry e mushroom dishes.
  • Excellent slightly fresh with vegetarian dishes o light Asian cooking.
