Marsanne

The Marsanne is one of the grape varieties with white berries most representative of the Rhône Valley northern. It is grown mainly in the prestigious appellations of Saint-Joseph, Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage e Saint-Péray. Its origin is tied to the town of Marsanne in the Drôme department, and its history has been bound up with the viticulture of this region for centuries. Marsanne stands out for its ability to produce elegant, long-lived wines that develop beautifully over time. It is often vinified as a single variety, but in many appellations it is paired with Roussanne, which adds freshness and aromatic lift. Compared with Roussanne, Marsanne tends to give wines that are more full-bodied, with lower acidity and more structure. From an ampelographic point of view, Marsanne has medium-sized bunches, with thick-skinned, golden yellow berries. This makes it ideal for coping with the hot summers of the Rhône, while keeping a good balance between sugars and acidity.

Sensory Profile

Wines produced from Marsanne are known for their aromas refined e complex. In young wines, aromas emerge of white flowers, almond, peach, melon e honey. Over time, they evolve towards notes of toasted hazelnut, butter, beeswax e sweet spices. On the palate they are soft, with a velvety texture, moderate acidity and remarkable persistence. The low natural acidity is well balanced by the full structure and generous body, making the wines round and deep.
