Nieddera

The Nieddera is an ancient grape variety with black berries native to the Sardinia, grown mainly in the province of Oristano, in the western part of the island. This grape variety is an important piece of the Sardinian winemaking tradition, known for producing wines characterised by freshness, structure and a pronounced aromatic personality. Thanks to its strong bond with the land, Nieddera has recently been rediscovered and championed, finding a place both as a single variety and in blends with other local grape varieties.

Origin and History of Nieddera

The name "Nieddera" comes from the Sardinian word “niedda”, which means black, referring to the intense colour of the berries of this grape variety. It is a very old variety, with origins lost in the centuries, probably introduced to Sardinia during the period of Phoenician or Roman rule.Traditionally grown along the Valle del Tirso and in the territory of Cabras, Nieddera was for a long time used to make wines for local consumption. Today, thanks to the growing attention to indigenous grape varieties, it is considered a viticultural heritage to be preserved and promoted.
