Châteauneuf-du-Pape and its wines

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is one of the most prestigious appellations of Southern Rhône Valley, in the department of the Vaucluse, in Provence.
Its name, which means “the Pope's new castle”, recalls the popes' summer residence at Avignon in the 14th century, when the local wine gained international recognition.
The area
The planted area covers about 3.200 hectares, with vineyards resting on a mosaic of soils: sand, clay, limestone and the famous galets roulés (pebbles smoothed by the Rhône), which store heat during the day and release it at night, encouraging optimal ripening of the grapes.
The climate is warm, dry Mediterranean, dominated by Mistral, a wind that keeps the vineyards healthy and dry. These conditions make Châteauneuf-du-Pape a unique terroir, able to express powerful, spicy, long-lived reds, as well as rare and sought-after whites.
What is the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine district?
The appellation AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape, recognised in 1936 among the first in France, allows up to 13 historic grape varieties, although today most of the cuvées revolve around Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre.
The wines can be:
-
Reds (over 90%): complex, spicy, full-bodied and long-lived.
-
Whites (about 5-7%): rare, rich and mineral, with excellent ageing capacity.
