Collina toscana costiera and its wines

Collina toscana costiera: My personal top three

The appellation Collina Toscana Costiera stretches along the hill country of the Tuscan coast, mainly in the province of Livorno and part of that of Pisa, looking out over the Tyrrhenian Sea.
It is an area that benefits from mild winters, breezy summers, soils sandy, clay and in places limestone, and of a viticulture that combines tradition and experimentation, above all with international grape varieties.

Although it is less well known than other Tuscan areas, this appellation is a sound alternative to the big names of the coast, with wines that focus on freshness, fruit and immediacy, while retaining good structure.

What is the Collina Toscana Costiera wine district?

Collina Toscana Costiera IGT is an IGT appellation recognised in 1995, covering the hill areas of:

  • Livorno (between Collesalvetti, Rosignano, Suvereto, and the area around Bolgheri)

  • Pisa (as far as Castagneto Carducci, Santa Luce, Montescudaio)

The IGT allows plenty of room for manoeuvre:

  • Red, white and rosé wines

  • The option of a single variety or a blend

  • Extensive use of indigenous and international grape varieties
