Dorgali and its wines

Dorgali: My personal top three

Dorgali is a historic wine district located in Eastern Barbagia of the Sardinia, in the province of Nuoro, a few kilometres from the Gulf of Orosei. This village, set between the sea and the mountains of the Supramonte, boasts a thousand-year-old winemaking tradition, helped by granitic soils, a Mediterranean climate and wide temperature swings between day and night.

Dorgali is particularly famous for the production of Cannonau di Sardegna, which here reaches intense, elegant and spicy expressions, but also for wines from indigenous grape varieties such as Monica, Vermentino and Nuragus, able to express freshness, minerality and authenticity.

What is the Dorgali wine district?

Dorgali falls within the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) Cannonau di Sardegna, with the option of mentioning the sub-zone Classico or the production area.

The Dorgali cooperative, together with several independent producers, has brought out the unique terroir of this area, characterised by:

  • Sandy soils on a granite base → Perfect for fine, mineral wines.

  • Proximity to the sea → Saline influences and cool winds.

  • Variable altitude → From 50 to 500 m above sea level, ideal for preserving acidity and aromas.

Characteristics of Dorgali Wines

Colour

  • Reds (Cannonau): Deep ruby red, turning garnet with ageing.

  • Whites: Pale straw yellow in the Nuragus and Vermentino.

  • Fruity: Berries, plum, cherry in the reds; green apple, peach and citrus in the whites.

  • Floral: Wild flowers in the young Cannonau; white flowers in the Vermentino.

Palate

  • Soft and Enveloping: In the Cannonau wines of Dorgali, with sweet, ripe tannins.

  • Fresh and Savoury: In the whites, ideal with fish and shellfish dishes.

  • Structured and Lingering: In the more aged Cannonau wines or the Riserva.

Typical Grape Varieties of Dorgali

Black Grape Varieties

  • Cannonau (Grenache): Sweetness of fruit, spice, ability to age.

  • Monica: Lighter and fruitier, suited to fresh wines for early drinking.

White Grape Varieties

  • Vermentino: Fresh, citrusy, slightly saline.

  • Nuragus: Light, delicate, mineral.

Why Choose a Wine from Dorgali?

A wine from Dorgali is the ideal choice for anyone wishing to discover the true soul of Sardinia, between sea, mountains and thousand-year-old traditions. The Cannonau di Dorgali are perfect with barbecued meat, wild boar, aged cheeses such as Sardinian pecorino and typical dishes such as culurgiones.
The whites, on the other hand, go splendidly with fish dishes, Mediterranean starters and seasonal vegetables.
