The Etna wine area is one of the most fascinating and prestigious in Italy, on the slopes of the highest active volcano in Europe,Etna, in Sicily. Geography and Territory of the Etna Wine Region

The wine area of theEtna develops around the volcano, covering the municipalities of Catania, Randazzo, Linguaglossa, Castiglione di Sicilia, Milo, Zafferana Etnea, Viagrande and other villages that stretch between the 450 and the 1.200 metres in altitude.

Volcanic Soils

The soil consists mainly of volcanic sands, ash, basalt e lapilli, elements that guarantee:
  • Excellent drainage, ideal for viticulture.
  • Large mineral richness, which gives the wines a marked salinity e freshness.
  • Diversity of terroir, due to the many eruptions that have layered the soil in a unique way.

Climate

Etna enjoys a climate that is continental tempered by the influence of the Ionian Sea:
  • Hot summers but well ventilated.
  • Temperature swings wide daily swings, which preserve the aromas and acidity of the grapes.
  • Cold winters and rainy, useful for the water reserves of the vineyards.

Etna DOC appellation

TheEtna DOC was established in 1968, making it one of the first controlled designations of origin in Sicily. The DOC covers the production of several types of wine, all closely tied to the terroir.

Types of Etna DOC Wine

  • Etna Rosso DOC: Based on Nerello Mascalese and up to 20% of Nerello Cappuccio. Elegant, mineral, long-lived wines.
  • Etna Bianco DOC: Based on Carricante, often as a single variety or with the addition of Catarratto. Fresh, savoury wines of great elegance.
  • Etna Rosato DOC: Obtained mainly from Nerello Mascalese, fresh and fruity.
  • Etna Spumante DOC: Metodo Classico based on Nerello Mascalese, refined and mineral.

Native Grape Varieties of Etna

Etna is one of the Italian areas with the largest number of native grape varieties, grown for centuries and closely tied to the land.

Black Grape Varieties

  • Nerello Mascalese: The emblematic grape variety of Etna, known for its elegance, minerality and longevity.
  • Nerello Cappuccio: Used in blends to soften and enrich red wines.

White Grape Varieties

  • Carricante: The leading variety of the Etna Bianco DOC, famous for its freshness, acidity and minerality.
  • Catarratto: Often blended with Carricante to add body and structure.

Style of the Wines of Etna

Etna Rosso DOC

  • Colour: Light ruby red.
  • Aromas: Red fruits, spices, volcanic ash, aromatic herbs.

Etna Bianco DOC

  • Colour: Straw yellow.
  • Aromas: Citrus, Mediterranean herbs, saline notes.
  • Palate: Savoury, mineral, with a long finish.

The producers of Etna are deeply attached to tradition, but they are not afraid of innovation in order to make the most of the native grapes.
  • Spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts.
  • Ageing in large casks of oak or in stainless steel, to preserve freshness and minerality.
  • Techniques of organic farming e biodynamics, to respect the environment and the typical character of the wine.
