The Loire and its wines
The Loire Valley (Vallée de la Loire) is one of the largest and most prestigious wine regions of France, famous for its great variety of fresh, mineral white wines, elegant, spicy reds, as well as quality rosés and sparkling wines. The region stretches along the river Loire, from the Atlantic coast to the centre of France, crossing four main sub-zones: Pays Nantais, Anjou-Saumur, Touraine and Centre-Loire.
The Loire is particularly known for native grape varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, the Chenin Blanc, Melon de Bourgogne and Cabernet Franc, which give rise to famous appellations such as Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Vouvray and Muscadet.
