The Mâconnais and its wines

The Mâconnais is a renowned wine district in the southern part of Burgundy, in France. This region is famous for producing white wines elegant and approachable, made mainly from Chardonnay, which here give a fresher, fruitier version than the more prestigious areas of northern Burgundy.
Geography and Territory
- Location: It stretches between the Côte Chalonnaise to the north and the Beaujolais to the south, in the Saône-et-Loire.
- Climate: Temperate with continental and southern influences, marked by hot summers and cold winters. The good temperature swings help to develop wines balanced between freshness and ripeness.
- Soils: Mainly made up of limestone, clay e marl, with rock formations reminiscent of the topography of Chablis and the Côte d'Or. This soil gives the wines a marked minerality.
Grape Varieties Grown
- Chardonnay (95%): It is the leading grape variety, which here expresses itself in fresh, fruity, mineral wines.
- Gamay: Grown in small quantities for the production of light reds.
- Aligoté: Found in marginal quantities, used for simple, easy-drinking white wines.
Designations of Origin
The Mâconnais is divided into several appellations that reflect the particular features of the individual terroirs:- Mâcon AOC:
- It covers white, red and rosé wines.
- The Chardonnay whites are fresh, fruity and ready to drink.
- Mâcon-Villages AOC:
- Only for white wines from Chardonnay.
- They offer greater quality than plain Mâcon AOC, with more freshness and aromatic lift.
- Mâcon + village name (e.g. Mâcon-Lugny, Mâcon-Solutré):
- Wines that express the specific character of their home village.
- They are more complex and more representative of the terroir.
- Saint-Véran AOC:
- Elegant, mineral Chardonnay whites, with notes of ripe fruit.
- Pouilly-Fuissé AOC:
- The most prestigious appellation of the area.
- Complex white wines, with good structure, often aged in wood, with notes of hazelnut, butter e yellow-fleshed fruit.
- Pouilly-Loché and Pouilly-Vinzelles AOC:
- They produce white wines in smaller quantities, but of excellent quality, mineral and fresh.
- Viré-Clessé AOC:
- An appellation devoted to elegant Chardonnays, with floral and fruity notes, often of great freshness.
Style of the Wines
I Chardonnay of the Mâconnais stand out for:- Fresh, fruity aromas: Notes of green apple, pear, white peach e white flowers.
- Minerality: Derived from the limestone soils, especially in the wines of Saint-Véran and Pouilly-Fuissé.
- Freshness and balance: Thanks to the favourable climate, the wines keep good acidity.
- Soft structure: In the more complex versions, with light notes of butter e hazelnut due to ageing on the fine lees or in wood.
Winemaking Techniques
- Stainless steel: Predominant, to preserve freshness and aromatics.
- Ageing on the fine lees: To give greater body and complexity.
- Moderate use of wood: Above all in the most prestigious appellations such as Pouilly-Fuissé, where the aim is structure without covering the typicity of the grape variety.
Food Pairings
The white wines of the Mâconnais are extremely versatile and lend themselves to a range of pairings:- Fresh goat's cheeses and soft-rind ones.
- Grilled fish and dishes made with seafood.
- Poultry e white meat in light preparations.
- Pasta with pesto or with light vegetable-based sauces.
Why Choose a Wine from the Mâconnais?
- Excellent value for money: The wines of the Mâconnais, especially the Mâcon-Villages and the Saint-Véran, offer high quality at more accessible prices than the great cru of Burgundy.
- An authentic expression of Chardonnay: Here the grape variety shows itself in its purest form, without excessive wood ageing.
- Versatility: From the fresh, immediate drinkability of the Mâcon-Villages to the complexity of the Pouilly-Fuissé, there is a wine for every occasion.
