The Marche and its wines

Go straight to: Castelli di Jesi - Colli Maceratesi - Matelica - Montecarotto - Vallesina

The Marche are a wine region of central Italy looking out over the Adriatic Sea, known for producing fresh, mineral white wines, intense, elegant reds and for a winemaking identity strongly tied to the grape varieties native.

Thanks to rolling hills, limestone and clay soils and a climate that combines continental and maritime influences, the Marche offers ideal conditions for growing Verdicchio, Pecorino, Passerina, Montepulciano and Sangiovese, grape varieties that express themselves with great typicity and longevity.

What is the Marche wine district?

The Marche is divided into 5 wine provinces (Pesaro-Urbino, Ancona, Macerata, Fermo and Ascoli Piceno) and numerous quality appellations:

  • Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC / DOCG → A famous mineral, long-lived white.

  • Verdicchio di Matelica DOC / DOCG → A more mountainous version, taut and vertical.

  • Rosso Conero DOCG → A powerful red based on Montepulciano, produced on the Conero headland.

  • Rosso Piceno DOC → A blend of Montepulciano and Sangiovese, versatile and fruity.

  • Offida DOCG → For high-quality wines from Pecorino and Passerina.

  • Lacrima di Morro d'Alba DOC → An aromatic, floral red from Lacrima.

The region also has numerous IGTs (Indicazioni Geografiche Tipiche) that allow for experimentation and stylistic variety.
