Montecarotto and its wines

Montecarotto: My personal top three

Montecarotto is one of the villages that symbolise the production of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, located in the province of Ancona, in the Marche.
Set in the heart of the Classic, Montecarotto stands out for its altitude (about 380 m above sea level), its clay-limestone soils and the hillside aspect that encourages marked temperature swings, ideal for the the aromatic concentration and longevity of white wines.

As well as the Verdicchio, there are also Lacrima, Montepulciano, Sangiovese and some international varieties, often vinified by small artisan wineries with an organic or sustainable approach.

What is the Montecarotto wine district?

Montecarotto is one of the "castles" most representative of the appellation:

  • Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico DOC

  • Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Riserva DOCG

The area is known for the production of Structured, mineral Verdicchio wines, able to to develop beautifully over time, even beyond 10 years. Some estates vinify sur lie versions, in amphora or with skin maceration.

Characteristics of Montecarotto Wines

  • Structured and Long-lived: In the Riserva versions, ideal with rich dishes or complex main courses.

  • Fresh and Fruity: In the everyday reds, often from local grape varieties.

Typical Grape Varieties of Montecarotto

White Grape

  • Verdicchio: The leading grape variety of the area, taut, saline, with a slightly bitter finish.

Black Grape

  • Montepulciano, Sangiovese: Used for blends and structured reds.

  • Lacrima: In smaller quantities, floral and spicy.

Why Choose a Wine from Montecarotto?

I Verdicchio di Montecarotto are among the most representative of the Castelli di Jesi area: mineral, elegant and long-lived, ideal with fish, fried food, soups, white meat, fresh cheeses and white truffle from the Marche.
The Riserva versions go beautifully with rabbit in porchetta, timballi and refined country cooking.
