Morgon and its wines

The wine district of Morgon lies in the heart of southern Beaujolais, in the region of Burgundy , in France. It is one of the most renowned areas among the ten Beaujolais Crus, famous for its structured, long-lived red wines made exclusively from Gamay.
Geography and Territory
- Location: The Morgon area extends across the commune of Villié-Morgon, in the northern part of Beaujolais, bordering the crus of Chiroubles e Fleurie.
- Planted area: Approximately 1.100 hectares of hillside vineyards.
- Soils: The area is characterised by soils composed mainly of schists, decomposed granite e metamorphic rocks, known as "roche pourrie". These poor, well-drained soils are ideal for growing Gamay, since they encourage the production of complex, long-lived wines.
- Altitude: The vineyards lie between 250 and 400 metres above sea level, offering good sun exposure.
- Climate: Continental with Mediterranean influences, with hot summers and cold winters. The wide temperature swings favour a balanced ripening of the grapes, keeping freshness and aromatic intensity.
Division of the Terroir
The Morgon area takes in several sites known for their distinctive character:- Côte du Py: Morgon's most famous hill, with volcanic soils that give powerful, mineral wines.
- Les Charmes: It produces more elegant, fruity wines.
- Grand Cras e Corcelette: Areas that offer soft, aromatic wines.
Identity of the Area
The combination of varied soils, altitude e favourable climate gives Morgon wines a distinctive character, combining the fruitiness typical of Gamay with a solid structure, making this one of the most prestigious areas in Beaujolais.Morgon: My personal podium
