The Mosel and its wines

The Mosel: My personal podium
The Mosel is one of the most prestigious and fascinating wine regions in the world, in the south-west of Germany, along the river Mosel (Mosella in Italian). Known mainly for the production of outstanding white wines based on Riesling, the Mosel is a byword for elegant, fresh and mineral wines. This region enchants not only for the quality of its wines, but also for its breathtaking landscapes: steep vine-covered slopes, winding rivers and picturesque medieval villages.

Geography and Climate of the Mosel

The Mosel extends along the course of the river Mosel, which rises in France, crosses the Luxembourg and flows into the river Rhine in Germany. The wine region is divided into three main subzones:
  1. Upper Mosel (Obermosel): Close to the border with France and Luxembourg.
  2. Central Mosel (Mittelmosel): The most prestigious area, famous for the finest Riesling vineyards.
  3. Lower Mosel (Terrassenmosel): Marked by even steeper slopes, with soils rich in slate.

Soil and Terroir

The soil of the Mosel is dominated by blue slate e red slate, elements that give the wines a marked minerality and help to retain heat, encouraging the ripening of the grapes in the cooler months.

Climate

The Mosel enjoys a cool continental climate, with mild summers and long autumns. The moderating influence of the river Mosel and the sun exposure of the steep vineyards allow the grapes to ripen slowly and fully, while retaining a marked acidity.

Grape Varieties of the Mosel

The Riesling is unquestionably the emblematic grape variety of the Mosel, but it is not the only one grown.

Riesling

  • It covers over 60% of the planted area.
  • It produces wines of extraordinary freshness, with notes of white-fleshed fruit, citrus and a marked minerality.
  • It is perfect for winemaking ranging from dry to the sweet, through to the botrytised wines.

Müller-Thurgau

  • A more productive, easy-drinking variety, used for young, light wines.

Elbling

  • One of the oldest varieties in the region, used above all for fresh, frizzante wines.

Wine Styles of the Mosel

Thanks to the versatility of the Riesling, the Mosel offers a wide range of wine styles, from the driest to the sweetest.

Dry Riesling (Trocken)

  • A fresh, mineral wine, with vibrant acidity.
  • Ideal for pairings with fish dishes and Asian cuisine.

Off-dry Riesling (Halbtrocken or Feinherb)

  • Softer, with a balance between acidity and sweetness.
  • Perfect with spicy dishes or dishes based on white meat.

Sweet Riesling (Prädikatswein)

  • Wines made from grapes picked at different moments of ripeness. The categories include:
    • Kabinett: Light and fruity.
    • Spätlese: Riper and richer.
    • Auslese: A fuller-bodied wine, often sweet.
    • Beerenauslese (BA): Sweet, made from selected and often botrytised grapes.
    • Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA): Extremely sweet and concentrated, produced only in the best vintages.
    • Eiswein: Made from naturally frozen grapes, with high sweetness and acidity.

Winemaking in the Mosel

Winemaking in the Mosel is deeply tied to tradition, with an emphasis on purity and on the expression of the terroir.
  • Fermentation in stainless steel: To preserve freshness and fruity aromas.
  • Fermentation in wooden casks (Fuder): Large traditional casks of 1.000 litres, which give greater complexity without affecting the aromatic profile too much.
  • Ageing on the fine lees: To enrich the structure and roundness of the wine.

Food Pairings with Mosel Wines

The wines of the Mosel, thanks to their vibrant acidity and to the variety of styles, they lend themselves to numerous food pairings:
  • Dry Riesling: Perfect with seafood, steamed fish, salads e fresh cheeses.
  • Off-dry Riesling: Ideal with Asian dishes, spicy cooking e soft cheeses.
  • Sweet Riesling: It pairs beautifully with foie gras, blue cheeses e fruit-based dessert.
The combination of sweetness e acidity makes the sweet wines of the Mosel perfect for savoury and spicy dishes.
