Planargia and its wines

Planargia: My personal top three

The Planargia is a historic winegrowing area of Central-western Sardinia, in the province of Oristano and overlooking the Sea of Sardinia.
Its name means “widened plain” and refers to a plateau sloping gently towards the coast, between Bosa and Macomer, characterised by gentle hills and volcanic soils.

The area

The area enjoys a a maritime Mediterranean climate, with hot summers tempered by sea breezes and mild winters, conditions that allow optimal ripening of the grapes and the production of wines with a strong identity.

The Planargia is particularly known for the production of Malvasia di Bosa, one of the most iconic and rarest wines of Sardinia, which can be dry, sweet or fortified.

What is the Planargia wine district?

The DOC Malvasia di Bosa, established in 1972, is the main appellation of Planargia and covers the municipalities of Bosa, Magomadas, Modolo, Suni, Tinnura, Flussio, Tresnuraghes and part of the territory of Macomer.

The most representative types are:

  • Malvasia di Bosa Secco → elegant and mineral

  • Malvasia di Bosa Dolce and Liquoroso → broad, complex, a wine for contemplation

  • White and red IGT Planargia wines, often from native and international grape varieties
