Vallesina and its wines

Vallesina: My personal top three

The Vallesina is a winegrowing area in the central part of the Marche, in the province of Ancona, which takes its name from the valley crossed by the river Esino.
It is the chosen home of the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, one of the most iconic white wines in Italy, able to combine freshness, structure and longevity.

The area

The landscape of the Vallesina is made up of gentle hills at an altitude of between 100 and 400 metres, with soils clay, sand and limestone. The a Mediterranean climate with continental influences gives hot summers, cold winters and excellent temperature swings, ideal factors for preserving acidity and aromas.

Viticulture here has ancient roots, with evidence going back to Roman times, and today it combines tradition and innovation, making the most of indigenous grape varieties and focusing on wines with a strong sense of place.

What is the Vallesina wine district?

The Vallesina is mainly associated with two appellations:

  • Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC e DOCG Riserva

  • Esino DOC (white and red)

As well as Verdicchio, red and rosé wines are also made from Montepulciano e Sangiovese, and whites from Trebbiano Toscano e Malvasia.
